A vast array of films are scheduled for release in local cinemas between next month and September, promising to make the summer even more entertaining with “one of the greatest line-ups ever presented”.

Charles Pace, director, KRS, said: “We are very happy with the amount of enthusiasm by cinema-goers, however, we are always working hard to improve and therefore, this summer we believe we have a great line-up to present, catering for all ages and tastes.”

During the 13-week period, 39 new films will be launched courtesy of KRS Film Distributors ranging from comedies and thrillers to sci-fi and adventure. No fewer than 17 blockbusters will be released by KRS such as The Smurfs Movie, Monte Carlo, Captain America: The First Avenger, Larry Crowne, Zookeeper, Super 8, Cars 2 in 3D, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Fright Night, among others.

In the 24 weeks to June 7, 15 films topped the local weekly box-office chart, most in their first week of exhibition. The longest running films playing seven weeks or more during the period totalled 11. They are Just Go With It, followed by Meet The Parents: Little Fockers, and last but not least Gullivers’ Travels.

The films that were poorly attended and withdrawn after one week of exhibition were Tamara Drewe, Another Year, Winnie The Pooh, West Is West, Tomorrow When The War Began, Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky, The Girl Who Played With Fire, I’m Gonna Explode, Together, A Prophet, Sapphire, My Name is Khan and Gainsbourg: A heroic life.

As was predicted over a year ago, the conversion to digital 3D is moving at a rapid pace and now has reached mainstream level. It is estimated that in the UK there are over 1,500 digital screens – nearly half the total – and that, this year and next year, the majority of screens are expected to be digital and practically all of them by 2013.

The change has also been reflected in the exhibition of films, the majority of which are now available and exhibited in digital format.

In Malta, there are only six digital screens out of 37 and it is becoming increasingly difficult for all the films released in digital 3D medium to be screened at the six available screens. Last year KRS released 23 films in 3D and this year is expected to increase the number to 32.
