Fernando Torres has signed a contract extension with Atletico Madrid, the club have announced.

The 32-year-old former Spain international returned to his boyhood club in January 2015 and after a season in which he scored 11 goals in La Liga, he has committed to the Rojiblancos for a further campaign.

He said: “I am delighted to stay here, it is the place I’ve always wanted to be and finally it has come true.”

Torres made his professional debut with Atletico in the 2000-01 season and established himself as one of the most feared strikers in Europe, earning himself a move to Liverpool in 2007.

After three prolific seasons at Anfield, his form began to decline but Chelsea nevertheless paid £50m to bring him to Stamford Bridge in the 2011 winter transfer window.

Despite winning both the Champions League and Europa League with the Blues, he was unable to rediscover his scoring touch and after a loan spell at Milan, he returned home to Atletico with the intention of revitalising his career.

Last season was the first time since 2010 that he has hit double figures in the league, though he managed 20 in all competitions in Chelsea’s Europa League-winning season.

At international level, Torres scored 38 goals in 110 appearances for Spain – the last of which, in June 2014, he marked with a goal against Australia.

Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Perez Caminero said: “It is great news for everyone because Fernando knows the club well and is a reference point for his team-mates.

“The players trained in our academy have someone to look up to and he always has good advice to give them.

“He has tremendous experience and is used to winning titles and competing at the highest level.”
