I write this letter on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Group, a voluntary organisation of persons with this condition and their families. Our aim is to support the members to live a better life in society and assist them in different ways when needed.

At the moment we are very concerned about an issue that started last year when persons tried to book a cruise for summer 2012. I’m referring to cruises that start and finish in Malta. For some disabled persons getting a cruise from Malta is a need because they cannot use a plane.

Unfortunately, from this summer (2012) it was not possible for Maltese disabled persons to book an accessible cabin from Maltese travel agencies. These agencies are saying that they are not being allocated any accessible cabins because the Maltese market is too small compared to others. This was not the case in 2008, 2009 and 2011 when our members were able to book such cabins through the same Maltese agencies. Last winter these agencies refused to book these cabins for our members, two of whom managed to do by writing directly to a cruise company.

We feel that all this is not right because Maltese disabled persons have the same rights as other Europeans. We are doing our best to stop this new form of discrimination. Everyone has the right to go on holiday and enjoy himself or herself together with family and friends; it doesn’t matter if you are disabled or not. We ask the authorities to do something to stop this discrimination.
