A substantial amount of food stolen from a restaurant was found at a chef’s house, a court heard yesterday.

The chef, George Mifsud, 35, from Sliema, who used to work at Ta’ Kolina restaurant in his hometown, had taken some 36 large tins of tinned tomatoes, bags of curry spice, olives and other items, police inspector Jonathan Ransley said. Mr Mifsud pleaded not guilty to the single charge of theft.

His lawyer Alessandro Lia asked Magistrate Neville Camilleri for a ban on his client’s name since he was innocent until proven guilty. The request was turned down. Magistrate Camilleri granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000 and a deposit of €500.

Lawyer Roberto Montalto appeared for the owner of the restaurant.
