Stephen Fry will replace Jonathan Ross as host of the Bafta film awards next year.

The star, who hosted the event from 2001 to 2006 when he was succeeded by Mr Ross, said he had “a marvellous time” during his first stint at the event.

He said: “Hard as it may be for some characteristically sceptical Britons to believe, the Baftas have real kudos, reputation and cachet all over the world of film-making and I, old as I am, never cease to be shamelessly glamorised by the sight of so many legendary names who come every year as nominees and presenters.

“The adorable Jonathan Ross has done a magnificent job since I last hung up my bow-tie and boxed my patent leather pumps, and I am honoured and pleased to return to the lectern...”

The ceremony is the UK’s biggest film bash of the year and is often a pointer for success at the Oscars.

This year’s ceremony, which was held in February, was dominated by The King’s Speech which scooped seven awards on the night.

Mr Ross said he had “thoroughly enjoyed” hosting the award and wished Mr Fry the best.
