A man with an alcohol problem was yesterday sentenced for a year in jail after he pleaded guilty to stealing all four doors of a car outside a mechanic’s garage.
Charlie Brincat, an unemployed 33-year-old from Cospicua, admitted stealing the Peugeot 407 car that was parked in Polverista Street, across the road from his residence. The theft took place at about lunchtime on Thursday.
He also pleaded guilty to committing a crime during the operative time of a suspended sentence.
Magistrate Anthony Vella noted he had no option but to send Mr Brincat to jail and the accused shrugged his shoulders.
The magistrate also brought into effect an 18-month jail term handed down in 2012.
Mr Brincat is awaiting trial over his alleged involvement in a mugging incident that caused the death of Rose Garroni, 80, who was robbed of her handbag on December 8, 2010. She had fallen to the ground and slammed her head when the thieves struck and she succumbed to her injuries a few days later.
Police Inspector Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted.
