Premier League clubs in Malta could have as many as five foreign players on the pitch at one time next season if a proposal from a Standing Committee representing teams from the top flight gets the green light from the MFA.

At present, clubs are allowed to field four non-Maltese players in the same match. However, that could change if the MFA council give their backing ahead of the start of the 2013-14 season.

The Premier League Standing Committee held an annual gene-ral meeting at the Qormi FC pre-mises on Friday evening.

The extra foreign player issue was discussed thoroughly bet-ween the 12 clubs in the top flight next season before a vote was taken.

The majority were in favour of the move as the 9-3 in-favour verdict amply shows.

During the meeting, Tony Bezzina, the long-time Hibernians FC president, was confirmed as the group’s head for another term with Valletta FC supremo Victor Sciriha and vice-president Paul Spiteri being the two Standing Committee vice-presidents.

Redino Apap, of Qormi FC, is the treasurer and Mosta FC’s Chris Grech takes over as secretary, replacing Victor Cassar who lost his position after Ħamrun Spartans were demoted to Division One last season.

The two Premier League Standing Committee representatives at the MFA Exco next season will be Spiteri and Grech.
