I read with great interest the three-part article by Anne McKenna (May 18, June 8 and June 29) about the difficulties and problems encountered by the elderly and their family members once residential care is needed.
As a healthcare professional myself, I was left with mixed feelings. I could empathise with all scenarios, as my deceased mother was until recently a resident in a State-run residence.
I was extremely pleased to read that as a member of Fondazzjoni Xjuħija Attiva, McKenna and other members are proposing national standards for the care of the elderly. These will definitely improve the situation.
I am, however, perplexed as to why the State is dragging its feet in implementing these standards. Now I have heard that the government is modifying the proposed standards to make them “achievable” without involving any member of the group who worked on drafting them. If this is true, can someone explain this?
I hope that the authorities take the necessary action to ensure that these standards are implemented if the well-being and dignity of the elderly are truly at heart.
