Last Sunday, as news poured in to timesofmalta.com, the website gave us details of the remuneration to be received by certain government appointees in their service to the country.

The fact that the Government is giving such information to the public is, in my view, a great step forward.

I happened to post one small comment online, comparing my social security benefits of €600 to these remunerations. To my dismay, my comment was contested by a number of regular readers, who, until very recently, used to complain so much about the value of pensions and the cost of living.

I have always been a Labourite and quite active at times, however I will always abide by the truth, no matter who the Prime Minister is. Pensions were miserable a month ago and nothing has changed so far.

I also felt insulted by certain allegations fired bluntly without any knowledge of facts.

Certain people would do well to refrain from passing judgement on other people and, instead, try to keep the Government on track.

I happen to be a Labourite of the old guard, to whom working conditions and a decent standard of living are more important and need a more urgent revision than our laws.

The new Government should transmit a positive signal in this regard very soon.

Over the past decade, the value of money has been eroded and the so-called modernisation of the country has pushed more families below the poverty line.

What I have seen in the past fortnight does not make me too enthusiastic. I honestly hope that the new Government will get its priorities right.

The social division in our society is very similar to that which existed in the late 1960s. Some can afford luxuries while others struggle to survive in a crippled welfare State.

The new Labour Government cannot afford to make mistakes on this issue.

So far, things appear to be dictated by the new add-ons to the Labour Movement.

I hope and trust that the Government would be taking a centre-left line very soon.
