Nationalist leadership contender Mario de Marco yesterday insisted the party had to regularly update its policies in tandem with society’s changes.

The University is a factory of ideas

Addressing students at University, Dr de Marco said that, in a continuously evolving world, the party had to update its policies to reflect society.

“We cannot expect society to change according to a party’s policies but these policies have to reflect society’s needs,” he said.

He was speaking during a visit on campus where student organisations Pulse and Studenti Demokristjani Maltin were preparing for Thursday’s University Students’ Council (KSU) elections. He even put his leadership campaign aside to play a quick game of table tennis.

Surrounded by students from both politically-affiliated organisations, Dr de Marco said this election was a tool for students to voice their opinions and what they believed was best for fellow students.

“The University is a factory of ideas,” he said, as he urged students to challenge traditional ideas and stand up for what they believed in.

“Every student has the responsibility to challenge the norm, thinking out of the box and not just accept every rule that exists for the sake of accepting it,” he said.

He continued: “The easiest thing for a lecturer to do is to provide the information. But the real challenge for this institution is to become a place of formation, where students form their character and stand up for what they believe in.”
