While respecting the decisions of all as regards the divorce issue I would like publicly to congratulate all MPs including the Prime Minister who had the courage to consistently vote no in line with Christian teachings, which are beneficial to all. This was done while democratically honouring the will of one-third of the Maltese electorate.

Malta is predominantly a Catholic country although there is the need for some to shift from cultural religion to conviction. The faith of the majority of the Maltese people has always been advantageous to all as whole persons, as historically noted through the ages.

Therefore, this country deserves to have a Prime Minister who is sustained by this faith not only for his own good but for the good of the nation. One cannot but be proud of a Prime Minister who will go down in history as having the courage of his convictions while fully respecting democratic principles.

This leadership characteristic is essential to implement successfully a policy overcoming the repercussions of the global crisis as opposed to Greece for instance. It is also a quality which explains why Lawrence Gonzi has a record of addressing the toughest challenges and moving ahead, creating opportunities for the people.

This is a hard won stability which must not be taken for granted. If the people reflect objectively on these realities and prefer not to jeopardise this stability, they have the possibility of confirming Dr Gonzi in office in a couple of years’ time.
