The victim of a stabbing testified yesterday how he had jumped to the defence of his friends when he received the injuries he still feels the effects of six years on.

Joseph Digby, 22, was testifying in the case against 23-year-old Johann Montfort, who stands accused of his attempted murder on June 24, 2006.

Mr Digby said that after leaving Red Square nightclub in St Julians he went with friends to buy a pizza and proceeded to the car park behind Axis nightclub. At one point he saw the accused fighting with a friend of his, Christopher Vella.

He didn’t know what they were arguing about but, all of the sudden, Mr Montfort produced a pen knife and his friends panicked. This is when he decided to defend them.

Mr Vella said he had gone to speak to the accused because he owed one of his friends Lm10 (€23) and didn’t think it was right that he hadn’t paid him back yet.

The case continues.

Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri are appearing for the accused.
