A long overdue clean-up of Lower Fort St Elmo was started yesterday by the Cleansing Directorate and the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation.

Most of the debris, estimated to total some 90 tons, consists of materials left over by carnival float makers, who used the site for many years.

The corporation recently completed the restoration of Upper Fort St Elmo but no decision has been taken yet on the lower part.
