Alastair Cook won an important toss but the tourists conceded much of the advantage with poor shot selection and could have been in a deeper hole but for India’s poor catching and Bairstow’s dogged resistance. The keeper-batsman featured in 50-plus partnerships with Ben Stokes and the recalled Jos Buttler to revive England, who are 1-0 down in the five-match series.

Boxing: Filipino boxing great Manny Pacquiao has left the door open on the possibility of a rematch with Floyd Mayweather if the American ever comes out of retirement. Mayweather, now 39, beat Pacquiao by unanimous decision in May 2015 and announced his retirement four months later with a 49-0 record. “If he comes back into boxing there is a possibility, but right now we are not talking or discussing about that,” Pacquiao told Kyodo news agency.

Basketball, NBA: The Golden State Warriors made it a perfect 10 as they beat the Los Angeles Lakers 109-85. Kevin Durant top scored with 29 points, adding nine assists, as the Warriors registered a 10th successive victory and a 13th of the NBA season. Kevin Love led the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory as they beat the struggling Dallas Mavericks by 128-90. Love amassed 27 points, including seven three-pointers, while LeBron James contributed 11 assists in his 1,000th regular-season NBA game.
