Skiing: Four-time overall World Cup champion Lindsey Vonn (picture) has had surgery after breaking her right arm while training in Colorado. The 32-year-old American said she “severely fractured” the humerus bone after an accident at Copper Mountain on Thursday and underwent surgery in Vail later that day. “While I am beyond frustrated by this latest setback, at least my knees are ok and I will return to the slopes as soon as possible, as I always do!” Vonn, whose career has been punctuated by serious injuries, has won 76 World Cup races and is chasing Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86.

Federation Cup: Caroline Garcia stunned Petra Kvitova7-6 6-3 as France made it 1-1 against champions Czech Republic in the Fed Cup final after Karolina Pliskova won an epic first singles in the day. Garcia produced an aggressive performance to down Wimbledon champion Kvitova. The Czech threatened a comeback in the second set but the Frenchwoman was too hot and closed it out on her second match point. Pliskova had overcome Kristina Mladenovic’s stubborn resistance to put the visitors ahead with a thrilling 6-3 4-6 16-14 win.

Motor Racing: Lewis Hamilton’s pet bulldog Roscoe, who occasionally accompanies the triple F1 champion to races, has had his sperm frozen to ensure he can have puppies in future. Hamilton, racing at what could be a title-deciding Brazilian Grand Prix, revealed the news on an instagram account set up in his pet’s name and followed by nearly 100,000 fans. “Roscoe in great spirits. Due to some complications, we had to have him snipped,” the Briton, a regular on the celebrity gossip pages, wrote.

Basket, NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers ensured they fully enjoyed their trip to Washington as they beat the Wizards 105-94. The Cavs had earlier visited the White House for a reception with Barack Obama to celebrate their 2015-16 NBA championship and they followed it up on the court. Kyle Irving led the way with 29 points while LeBron James created further history by becoming the youngest player to reach 27,000 NBA points.

Games: Australia will host the 2018 Invictus Games for wounded military personnel, Britain’s Prince Harry announced yesterday. More than 500 serving and former personnel from 17 nations will compete in the multi-sports competition in Sydney. Harry, who launched the first such games in London in 2014, said Australia was chosen because it was an iconic city with a proud military heritage and sports-mad fans. The games are due to be held in Toronto next year.

Test Cricket: Debutant Haseeb Hameed struck his maiden 50 and shared an unbroken century partnership with captain Alastair Cook to push England’s lead over India to 163 runs on day four of the first test yesterday. The 19-year-old Hameed was unbeaten on 62 at the close with Cook on 46 as England reached 114 without loss, virtually ruling out the prospect of an India win on the final day. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid earlier picked up four wickets to help the touring side dismiss India for 488 and take a first- innings lead of 49 runs. India’s Ravichandran Ashwin made 70 to deny England a bigger advantage.
