Tennis: American great Jimmy Connors has put his hand up for one of the toughest coaching assignments in the world by offering to mentor Australia’s wayward talent Nick Kyrgios. The 64-year-old Connors fittingly made his approach on Twitter, a medium favoured highly by the moody 21-year-old, recently banned from the tour for two months. “Kyrgios – you want to be the best – come see me – you will learn to play, excite, and to win!! It’s you choice – or just be mediocre!gd luck,” he tweeted.

Rowing: The proposed rowing venue for the 2020 Tokyo Games should not be changed as part of cost-cutting measures as it is the only one that meets Olympic standards, the International Rowing Federation (FISA) said yesterday. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Games organisers have agreed to set up a review process to reduce ballooning costs and part of that operation will mean changing venues from those in the original bid plan. But FISA said:. “The Sea Forest Water Sports Centre is the only venue in Japan which can meet the requirements for an Olympic Games regatta.”

Rugby Union: Rugby stars past and present were among thousands who joined the grieving family of Anthony Foley as his remains were brought to his hometown church. Two hour-long queues formed at St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe in Co Clare, as people waited patiently to pay their respects to the Munster and Ireland favourite.
