Darts: Three-time darts world champion Martin Adams has revealed he is receiving treatment for prostate cancer. Adams, winner of the BDO title in 2007, 2010 and 2011, was diagnosed earlier this year and has recently completed a course of radiotherapy. The 60-year-old, nicknamed ‘Wolfie’, is scheduled to receive an update on his condition in the coming weeks.

Boxing: Scottish boxer Mike Towell has died in hospital after the 25-year-old suffered serious injuries in a welterweight bout in Glasgow on Thursday. Towell was knocked down in the opening round of his bout by Welshman Dale Evans and referee Victor Loughlin eventually stopped the contest in the fifth. The Dundee fighter received treatment in the ring before being taken to hospital. St Andrews Sporting Club, which organised the fight, yesterday said in a statement that Towell had died.

Australian rules: Western Bulldogs ended 62 years of hurt with a 22-point victory over Sydney Swans in a pulsating Australian Football League grand final played out in front of a crowd of 99,989 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground yesterday. The team from Melbourne’s western suburbs belied their underdog status with a huge team effort to become champions for the second time since their 1954 win as Footscray.

Tennis: Petra Kvitova raced to a 6-1 6-1 victory over Dominika Cibulkova in the Wuhan Open final yesterday to capture her first title of the year. The victory secured a second Wuhan title for the Czech and moves Kvitova up to 12th place in the race to qualify for the season-ending eight-woman WTA Finals. Despite her heavy defeat, Cibulkova will move up to a career-high eighth in the world rankings when they are released tomorrow.
