Tennis:  Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the US and Czech Lucie Safarova fought back from the brink of defeat to steal the US Open women’s doubles title, 2-6 7-6(5) 6-4 over Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic on Sunday. The French duo served for the match in the second set, but were broken, sending the set to a tiebreak, which Mattek-Sands and Safarova won 7-5. “It was a little bit of a slow start but I’ve got to give credit to our opponents,” said Mattek-Sands. “They came out playing big, serving big, making all their rolls, ripping returns.”

Horse racing: Britain’s Jockey Club has announced the return of a £1 million Triple Crown bonus for the 2016-17 season. The Jockey Club is offering the cash bonanza for any horse that can win the Betfair Chase at Haydock Park in November, the 32Red King George VI Chase at Kempton Park a month later and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March, the racing body said. The last horse to complete the hat-trick was Kauto Star a decade ago.

Motor racing: Five new drivers will take part in the third Formula E season, organisers of the world’s first fully electric car racing series said. The drivers include World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) champion Jose Maria Lopez of Argentina, the 2015 FIA GT World Cup winner Maro Engel of Germany and the winner of the 2015 FIA F3 European Championship, Felix Rosenqvist of Sweden.
