Athletics: Spanish athlete Bruno Hortelano has suffered a serious hand injury in a car accident in Madrid and undergone an operation, his agent said yesterday. Hortelano holds the Spanish record for the 100 metres and 200 metres and won the 200 metres gold medal at the European Championships in Amsterdam in July. The 24-year-old went to the Rio Olympic Games but narrowly failed to qualify for the 200 metres final.

Triathlon: Olympic silver medallist Jonny Brownlee won the penultimate ITU World Triathlon Series race of the season in Edmonton on Sunday to edge closer to overall leader Mario Mola. Brownlee looked in fine form over the sprint distance and gave himself plenty of time to enjoy the victory ahead of Spain’s Mola in second. Brownlee now sits 235 points behind Mola in the rankings with just the grand final in Cozumel, Mexico, to come later this month.

Golf: The unlikely figure of Caroline Masson emerged from a crowded leaderboard to clinch a one-stroke victory at the Manulife LPGA Classic, in Canada, on Sunday. German Masson recovered from a double-bogey at the first hole, roaring back with nine birdies to leapfrog more than a dozen players with a five-under-par 67 at the Whistle Bear course in Cambridge, Ontario. Masson’s victory was just the second of the year by a European in a season dominated by Asian-born players.

Solidarity: American women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe knelt during the US national anthem at a Sunday match, calling it a deliberate move to support NFL quarter-back Colin Kaepernick, who stoked controversy by flouting the tradition of standing during the song. Rapinoe said: “It was a little nod to Kaepernick and everything that he’s standing for right now.” Last week, Kaepernick carried on with his protest against racial injustice before San Francisco 49ers’ game against San Diego Chargers, by refusing to stand during The Star Spangles Banner.

Rugby Union: Former England head coach Stuart Lancaster has returned to rugby union as senior coach at Leinster until the end of the season, the Irish province said yesterday. Lancaster has been out of the game since resigning last November following their disappointing World Cup campaign. The 46-year-old replaces Kurt McQuilkin, who left for family reasons, and will work under head coach Leo Cullen.
