Motor Racing: The historic Monza circuit is to stay on the Formula One calendar after agreeing a new deal with the sport’s organisers, Italian officials said yesterday. The circuit near Milan has been on the calendar every year bar one since the championship started in 1950 but had no contract beyond this year and its future had been uncertain. Roberto Maroni, president of the Lombardy region, said on his Facebook that a deal had been reached. “The Italian Grand Prix will stay in Monza,” he said. “With a few days to go until the signing of the contract, I’m very satisfied.”

Olympics: Czech gymnast Vera Caslavska, whose seven gold medals made her the country’s most decorated Olympic athlete, has died aged 74 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, the head of the Czech Olympic Committee said yesterday. “Vera was a fighter. She was diagnosed last year in the spring. When she did not come with us to (the Olympic Games this summer in) Rio it was clear the situation was bad,” committee president Jiri Kejval said by telephone. Caslavska’s medals included golds in the individual all-round gymnastics in the 1964 and 1968 Games.

Swimming: The manager of South Korea’s national swimming team has resigned as an investigation continues into a scandal involving the alleged installation of hidden cameras to take pictures of female athletes, the national federation has said. “As manager that leads the team, I deeply feel responsible that such (a) shameful incident took place,” Ahn Jong-taek, who joined the swimming team in 2008 as coach and has been the team manager since 2012, told Yonhap news agency. “I hope (the) truth would be revealed clearly as soon as possible so that other swimmers and coaches would not suffer.”
