Rugby Union: All Blacks prop Owen Franks has been cleared of eye gouging allegations after the southern hemisphere’s governing body did not issue any citings from New Zealand’s Rugby Championship clash against Australia. Video footage appeared to show the forward’s hands raking across the face of Wallabies lock Kane Douglas during a maul early in Saturday’s clash at Wellington Regional Stadium. Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said after his side’s 29-9 loss that he had seen the incident and that he thought the match citing commissioner would examine it further. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, however, said yesterday they had not been told of any citings from the match.

Tennis: Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska declared it mission accomplished after clinching a 6-1 7-6(1) victory over Elina Svitolina in the final of the Connecticut Open in New Haven. Radwanska accepted a wild card into the event because she wanted to tune up for the US Open that starts today and the 27-year-old Pole will head to Flushing Meadows brimming with confidence after collecting her 19th career WTA title. “Thank you so much... for giving me that wild card,” Radwanska laughed during her winner’s speech. “I definitely appreciate it and I’ll be back next year for sure.” Radwanska, the fourth seed at the US Open, faces American Jessica Pegula in the first round at Flushing Meadows, with a potential semi-final encounter against top seed Serena Williams.

Athletics: Laura Muir set a new British women’s 1,500 metres record at the Diamond League meeting in Paris. The Scot, who finished seventh in the Olympic final in Rio, took over two seconds off her previous best to lower the British record to a time of three minutes 55.22 seconds. “The race was amazing,” Muir told paris.diamondleague.com. “I couldn’t believe the time, especially since I didn’t do one track session since Rio. I just went with the pacemaker and I knew I had to dig in and hold on during the third lap.”
