Tennis: Monica Puig created history as Puerto Rico’s first-ever Olympic gold medallist after defeating Angelique Kerber in the women’s singles final. Puig was already guaranteed to be the country’s first female medallist and only the ninth athlete ever from the Caribbean archipelago to stand on the podium. But the 22-year-old kept her momentum going to beat Kerber 6-4 4-6 6-1.

Women’s doubles final: Makarova/Vesnina (RUS) bt Hingis/Bacsinszky (SUI) 6-4 6-4.

Mixed doubles final: Mattek-Sands/Sock (US) bt V. Williams/Ram (US) 6-7 6-1 10-7.

Target Shooting: Niccolo Campriani won his second gold of the Games by clinching the men’s 50 metre rifle three positions event yesterday, making Italy the most successful country in the shooting in Rio with four golds. Campriani beat Russia’s Sergey Kamenskiy in the last of the 15 shooting events. France’s Alexis Raynaud took the bronze. Campriani also took the gold in the 10 metre air rifle event, making him the only shooter to win two golds in Rio.

Fencing: Russia dismantled Ukraine to win their fourth fencing gold at the Rio Olympics as the Americans took bronze over traditional powerhouse Italy for the second straight day. Russia lost just one of nine bouts in the women’s team saber final, trouncing Ukraine 45-30 to rack up seven fencing medals at the Games – their best performance in two decades. The Americans fell just short against Russia in the semi-finals, but earned the bronze with a clinical win over the Italians, following the example of the US men’s foil team on Friday.

Weightlifting: Iran won their second Olympic Games gold medal in a matter of just a few days when Sohrab Moradi finished well clear of his rivals in the men’s 94kg event. When Kianoush Rostami broke a world record in winning the 85kg on Saturday he predicted more glory to come for Iran. It arrived in the next event when Moradi won by 8kgs from Vladzim Sraltsou, of Belarus, and Aurimas Didzbalis of Lithuania.

Gymnastics: Max Whitlock (picture) made it a day to remember for Britain when he swivelled to the top of the podium with a smooth pommel horse performance which earned him a second gold yesterday. Less than two hours after he ended Britain’s 120-year wait for an Olympic gymnastics gold medal by winning the floor exercise, Whitlock was again on top in his specialist event with a score of 15.966. Louis Smith completed a 1-2 for Britain as he picked up a second successive Olympic silver in the discipline with 15.833.
