Motor Sport: Brazilian law enforcement agents stormed a hideout near Sao Paulo and freed the kidnapped mother-in-law of F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, police said. Aparecida Schunk was found safe and police arrested two men. Sao Paulo police did not comment further on the operation or the kidnapping. But local news reports said they were searching for other members of the gang. The 67-year old Schunk was kidnapped on July 22 and her captors asked for 120 million reais ($36.5 million).

Golf: American Jimmy Walker broke through for his first major title with a one-shot win over Jason Day in the PGA Championship at water-logged Baltusrol. The 37-year-old canned a three-foot par putt to cap a wire-to-wire win with steely precision, shooting a final-round 67 to finish on 14-under-par 266. His victory was far from routine, however. Walker had to return to the course early Sunday morning to play his entire third round after heavy rain and thunderstorms suspended play on Saturday, and shot two-under 68 for a one-shot lead going into the final 18.

Sumo: Japan mourned the death of legendary sumo wrestler Chiyonofuji yesterday, a day after the 31-time tournament champion succumbed to cancer in a Tokyo hospital at the age of 61. The muscular wrestler is third on the all-time list for the most championship wins behind Hakuho (37) and Taiho (32). Chiyonofuji was promoted to the sport’s highest rank of yokozuna after the Nagoya tournament of 1981 and retired following the 1991 tournament after racking up 1,045 career victories.

Cricket: Darren Lehmann has extended his contact as Australia’s head coach until 2019 to cover the World Cup and the Ashes series in England that year, the country’s cricket board (CA) said. The 46-year-old former left-handed batsman took on the role on the eve of the 2013 Ashes and despite losing 3-0 in England, he went on to guide the team to series wins over South Africa, England, India, New Zealand and West Indies. He also won the 2015 World Cup on home soil with Australia, who currently top the ICC rankings in both test and one-day international cricket.
