Basket, NBA: Croatian Dario Saric has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, the team said, two years after acquiring the rights to the highly-rated forward. Saric, a two-time Europe Young Men’s Player of the Year, was selected 12th by the Orlando Magic in the 2014 NBA draft, and traded to the 76ers. The 22-year-old has spent the past two seasons playing for Anadolu Efes in the Turkish League. In 2015-16, he averaged 11 points and six rebounds while shooting 48 per cent from the floor. Last week, he was named MVP of the 2016 Olympic qualifying tournament after helping Croatia earn an Olympic berth with an overtime victory over Italy.

Golf: The British Open was fortified by the over-40s yesterday as Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson produced a ding-dong tussle to turn golf's oldest major into a gripping two-man slugfest. Stenson, 40, bidding to become the first Scandinavian male to win a major championship, began the day one behind his playing partner and ended it one in front after a 68, the joint lowest round of the day, left him on 12-under-par 201. Mickelson, 46, who is hoping to become the oldest winner of the tournament in the modern era, returned a 70 for 202. In third spot, a distant six strokes off the pace, was American Bill Haas (69) with Andrew Johnston (70) flying the flag for Britain in fourth position.

Tennis: Czech Tomas Berdych has become the third high-profile tennis player to withdraw from the Olympics in two days, saying his concerns over the Zika virus prompted his decision. The world number eight’s announcement follows the decision by Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic and Simona Halep to withdraw from next month’s Rio tournament. “It was a hard decision for me to take after a long and painstaking discussion with my dearest,” Berdych, 30, said on his Twitter page yesterday. “It is because of the Zika virus spread in the country of the Olympics. As I have founded a family recently, to limit health risks towards my nearest is the utmost priority.”
