Rugby Union: Ireland scrum-half Eoin Reddan has retired from professional rugby after a 10-year international career to take up a role in aviation finance, he confirmed yesterday. The 35-year-old Leinster player will sign off with his 71st international cap against South Africa this weekend. During his career he made 11 Rugby World Cup appearances across the 2007, 2011 and 2015 tournaments and featured in the 2014 and 2015 Six Nations title-winning campaigns.

Athletics: Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford has pulled out of the British Championships in Birmingham over fitness concerns but has allayed fears over his Rio participation. Rutherford took the decision after suffering whiplash at the Birmingham Diamond League this month. “I’m disappointed not to be competing, but defending the Olympic title is my main focus for 2016,” the 29-year-old was quoted as saying by the British media.

Tennis: Former world number one Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from Wimbledon with a knee injury, organisers said yesterday. Belarussian Azarenka, who would have been seeded six at the championships, has not played since retiring from a first-round match at the French Open last month. It is yet another blow for the two-times Australian Open champion who has been plagued by foot injuries.
