Athletics: Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson (picture, right) is relieved after booking her place at the Rio Games in August and says she is setting her sights on a first Olympic heptathlon gold medal. The 23-year-old accumulated the 6,200 points needed for Olympic qualification at the Hypo-Meeting in Goetzis on Sunday to join compatriot Jessica Ennis-Hill in the Rio line-up. The Austrian event, won by Canada’s Brianne Theisen-Eaton, was Johnson-Thompson’s first major outing since a knee operation in October. Johnson-Thompson, who finished sixth at Goetzis with 6,304 points, recorded three personal bests.

Cricket: Captain Alastair Cook became the first England cricketer to reach 10,000 test runs on the fourth day of the second test against Sri Lanka, in Durham, yesterday. The left-handed opener is also the 12th batsman to reach the landmark. Cook joins Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, Allan Border, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Jacques Kallis on the list. The 31-year-old reached the milestone as England then completed the task of scoring 79 runs in the second innings to win the test and take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series.

Cycling: London Olympics BMX silver medallist Sarah Walker has failed to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Games after injury hampered the New Zealander’s last chance of making the starting line in August. The 27-year-old injured her shoulder in training at the World Championships in Colombia and was only able to finish fifth in each of her three qualifying races, failing to advance as one of the final 20 riders making it to the quarter-finals. She had needed to finish as one of the top two racers who had not already qualified for the Rio Games at the championships.

Rugby Union: Northampton centre Luther Burrell has been called into England’s squad for the three-test series in Australia next month after Manu Tuilagi withdrew with a hamstring injury. Burrell, who has won 14 caps, scored a try and impressed in England’s 27-13 victory over Wales at Twickenham on Sunday, his first international match since August 2015. Head coach Eddie Jones had initially overlooked Burrell in his original plans for the tour, only adding to the 28-year-old’s misery after the once regular starter was left out of the World Cup squad by predecessor Stuart Lancaster.

Motor Racing: Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson and Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat were both handed three-place grid penalties for next month’s Canadian Grand Prix after causing collisions in Monaco. Russian Kvyat collided with Renault’s Kevin Magnussen and Sweden’s Ericsson had a coming together with his Brazilian team-mate Felipe Nasr at the Rascasse corner on lap 47 which ended the race for both drivers.
