Formula One: Formula One has agreed to allow Pirelli more track days to test next year’s tyres after the sole supplier threatened to quit at the end of the season if a rule change was not ratified yesterday. “It has been approved,” said a spokesman for the International Automobile Federation (FIA). Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery was quoted as saying there would be insufficient time to prepare the wider tyres planned for 2017 if the commission failed to agree changes.

Gymnastics: Romania’s four-decade long Olympic medal streak in women’s gymnastics ended in bitter tears at the Rio test event after they failed to qualify a full team for the Brazil Games. Romania had scooped a team medal at every Olympics since 1976. However, they will not be lining up in the women’s team competition in Rio after failing to finish in the top four in the test event on Sunday.

Tennis: Australian former tennis player Nick Lindahl has avoided a jail term after pleading guilty to match-fixing charges relating to a game in 2013. Lindahl, 27, appeared for sentencing in Sydney’s Burwood court yesterday and was fined A$1,000 ($767). The charges related to a match Lindahl played against a junior in a low-level Futures tournament in Queensland. Lindahl’s opponent was approached by a third party before the game but rejected the offer and reported it to a match official.

Athletics: Ethiopian runner Lemi Berhanu Hayle won the men’s Boston Marathon yesterday in a late surge against defending champion and fellow Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa. Hayle beat all comers by covering the hilly course in two hours, 12 minutes and 45 seconds. On the women’s side, Ethiopian runner Atsede Baysa won in 2:29:19, overcoming a 37-second deficit in the last five miles of the race.
