Tennis: Roger Federer avenged his Wimbledon final loss to Novak Djokovic by beating the top-seeded Serb 7-6(1) 6-3 last night to capture his second consecutive Western & Southern Open title. The Swiss second seed, playing Djokovic for the first time since losing to him in the Wimbledon final last month, brought his record number of Cincinnati titles to seven with the win. With the win, Federer denied longtime rival Djokovic from completing the set of all nine ATP Masters titles and took a 21-20 edge in career head-to-head meetings.

Cricket: Australia quickly picked up the last two England wickets to secure a consolation victory in the final Ashes test at The Oval by an innings and 46 runs yesterday. England won the series 3-2 but Australia captain Michael Clarke celebrated an emphatic win on a rain-disrupted fourth day of his final test match. The hosts resumed on 258 for eight and Peter Siddle soon bowled Stuart Broad for 11. Siddle had Moeen Ali caught by wicketkeeper Peter Nevill for 35 to clinch victory and the Australian players gave Clarke a guard of honour as he led them off the field for the final time.

Rallying: Championship leader Sebastien Ogier won the German rally in dominant fashion yesterday to edge closer to his third consecutive driver’s title following his sixth win of the season. Driving a VW Polo, Ogier beat team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala by 23 seconds in the vineyard-covered hills hugging the Mosel river in western Germany after also dominating the Panzerplatte area on Saturday, taking his total wins in the WRC to 30, level in second place on the all-time list along with Marcus Gronholm.
