Formula One: Japanese driver Kamui Koba-yashi will race for Caterham in Sunday’s Italian GP after being dropped for the previous round in Belgium last month. Spaniard Roberto Merhi, the 23-year-old who looks likely to race for the team later in the season, will make his F1 debut in today’s first practice using Kobayashi’s car. The experienced Kobayashi faces an uncertain future at the team and was replaced at Spa by Germany’s triple Le Mans winner Andre Lotterer.

Youth Olympics: South Korea’s embassy in Beijing confirmed reports that one of its athletes from the recent Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing was responsible for zapping Chinese Premier Li Keqiang with a laser pen. TV pictures from last week’s closing ceremony showed a beam of light flicking across Li’s face as he waved to the crowd at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center Stadium. “It’s extremely improper and regrettable to shine a laser pointer on state leader,” the embassy posted on Chinese microblog Weibo.

Athletics: Eric Hollingsworth has bowed to the inevitable and resigned as head coach of Athletics Australia after being sent home from the Commonwealth Games for releasing a statement critical of Olympic champion Sally Pearson. Athletics Australia also an-nounced a wide-ranging independent review of the sport led by former cricket coach John Buchanan. Hollingsworth never looked like seeing his contract through to its expiration next month after his decision to release a statement from Glasgow slamming Olympic 100m hurdles champion Pearson for failing to attend a pre-Games camp.
