Formula One: Ferrari’s long-serving engine boss Luca Marmorini has left the Maranello marque with immediate effect as part of an internal reshuffle. Following the introduction of the new power unit this season, Ferrari have struggled in comparison to one of their key rivals, Mercedes. That would appear to have resulted in Marmorini’s exit and the appointment of Massia Binotto as chief operating officer of the power unit department. Binotto will report directly to technical director James Allison, and work closely with power unit chief designer Lorenzo Sassi.

Cricket: Spinner Moeen Ali claimed six wickets to inspire England to a crushing 266-run win over India yesterday to level an absorbing series at 1-1 with two matches to play. Moeen took six for 67, the first five-wicket haul of his test career, and India crumbled to 178 all out in their second innings on the final morning of the match. England took the six wickets they needed to secure a first test win since they beat Australia at Durham last August, ending a run of 10 matches without victory.

Athletics: Kirani James broke the Commonwealth Games record to win gold in the men’s 400m final at Hampden Park on Wednesday night. The 21-year-old Olympic champion from Grenada won in 44.24 seconds. South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk took the silver in 44.68 and Lalonde Gordon, from Trinidad & Tobago, the bronze in 44.78s. Asked if he was now eyeing Michael Johnson’s long-standing record of 43.18 secs, James said: “Not really. I am going to be 22 in September. Michael Johnson set the record when he was 32 so I have got 10 years to work with. I’ve got a lot of things to work on. I’ve got to build up my power.”
