Rugby Union: Tries by Matt Giteau and Juan Smith and a faultless kicking display by Jonny Wilkinson in the penultimate game of his career gave Toulon a 23-6 victory over Saracens yesterday as the French side become the third team to retain the Heineken Cup. Giteau scored after 29 minutes as Toulon led 10-3 at half-time and Smith settled the match on the hour, while Wilkinson, 35 today, converted both tries and landed two penalties and a drop-goal.

Auto Racing: Nissan will join Audi, Porsche and Toyota at Le Mans next year with a full factory entry in the 24-hour sportscar race, the Japanese carmaker said. Nissan, who have never won at the La Sarthe circuit and last entered a works team in 1999, will also compete in the world endurance championship from 2015. “We won’t be turning up in a vehicle which is a basically another hybrid that looks like another Porsche, Audi or Toyota,” executive vice-president Andy Palmer said in a statement. “The brief to the team is to go with something different and exciting and of course, go to win.” Mazda are the only Japan manufacturer to have won Le Mans, in 1991.

Cycling: The Caribbean will host the 2014 European Track Championships in October. The European Cycling Union announced its elite track championships, which began in 2010, will be hosted by France, in Guadeloupe, from October 16 to 19. The event carries qualification points for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, so full-strength teams could travel. In 2010 it was held in Pruszkow, Poland, it has twice been held in Apeldoorn, Holland (in 2011 and 2013), while in 2012 it was in Lithuania.
