2016 Olympics: The International Olympic Committee announced a series of measures including a stronger presence in Rio de Janeiro to monitor prog-ress and speed up lagging preparations for the 2016 Olympics. Among the measures agreed are the setting up of a decision-making body involving the government, the IOC and organisers so decisions are taken faster, and sending the IOC’s Olympic Games executive director Gilbert Felli to Rio sooner than initially planned.

Rugby Union: The future of European club rugby was resolved yesterday with a new elite competition replacing the Heineken Cup, putting an end to a dispute that rumbled on for nearly two years and threatened to tear the northern hemisphere game apart. The new European Rugby Champions Cup will consist of teams from the Six Nations’ countries. Under its new guise the competition, starting in the 2014-15 season, will involve 20 teams, with six qualifying from each of the English Premiership and French Top 14 and seven from the Pro12, which includes teams from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Italy.

Golf: The Championship golf tour-nament has been relocated to a new venue in Singapore following “staging issues”with original host South Korea, the Asian Tour said yesterday. The Laguna National Golf and Country Club will now host next month’s $1.5m European Tour event, which marks a first return to the island-state for both tours since the staging of the 2012 Singapore Open on Sentosa island.
