Horse Racing: Experienced Australian jockey Desiree Gill (picture on right) has died from injuries she sustained after falling in a race at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club, Racing Queensland said yesterday. The 45-year-old, whose racing career spanned 30 years, fell heavily from her mount Celtic Ambition on Saturday evening and suffered a traumatic head injury. She never regained consciousness. Another female jockey, Simone Montgomerie, died in August after falling at the Darwin Racecourse in Northern Territory and being trampled by other horses.

Rugby Union: Wales centre Jonathan Davies has been ruled out of the remaining November tests due to a chest injury and could miss next year’s Six Nations. The British & Irish Lion sustained the injury trying to stop South Africa’s Jean de Villiers scoring his team’s first try in Saturday’s 24-15 win over Wales in Cardiff. “If he needs an operation it could be five months,” Wales coach Warren Gatland told the BBC. Wales play Argentina on Saturday followed by Tonga and Australia.

Golf: Adam Scott stormed to victory by four strokes at the Australian PGA Championship to celebrate his homecoming after winning the US Masters in some style on the Gold Coast yesterday. The world no.2 was made to wait for his win by rain and lightning that stopped play for nearly two hours but came out firing after the break to complete a round of four-under-par 67 for a tournament total of 14-under 270. Scott’s American playing partner Rickie Fowler finished second after a fourth round 68 with local youngster Jack Wilson, who also shot a 68, a further two shots back in third on eight-under.

Basket, NBA: Atlanta Hawks won their 11th straight game over Orlando Magic, 104-94, behind a balanced attack that featured six players in double figures. Forward Paul Milsap, one of eight new faces on the Hawks, led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Hawks overhauled their squad in the off-season and brought in long-time San Antonio Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer to help the franchise move up the ranks in the Eastern Conference. They are off to a 3-3 start.
