Tennis: Top seed Juan Martin del Potro beat Canada’s Milos Raonic yesterday to bag the Japan Open title and boost his chances of qualifying for the end-of-season ATP World Tour finals in London. The 25-year-old Argentine, won 7-6(5) 7-5 with the lone break of serve of the match coming at the end of the second set as Raonic lost the final in Tokyo for the second year running.

Rallying: Sebastien Ogier of France celebrated his maiden world title by winning his home rally yesterday. Ogier, driving a VW Polo, won the event in the Alsace region by 12.2 seconds from Dani Sordo (Citroen) while Finn Jari-Matti Latvala took third place 7.3 seconds further behind. On the first stage of the final day, Sebastian Loeb’s Citroen slid off the road and ended up in a ditch.

Golf: Continental Europe won the Seve Trophy for the first time since the inaugural event in 2000 when they beat Britain and Ireland 15-13 yesterday. Britain and Ireland had won the six previous editions of the event. Both teams were locked at 9-9 after Saturday’s foursomes but once again, Frenchman Gregory Bourdy made the difference. He became the first player to win all five matches in the same Seve Trophy by beating Scott Jamieson 5&3.
