Rugby Union: Toulon were crowned champions of Europe for the first time yesterday when, aided by the boot of Jonny Wilkinson, they came from behind to beat Clermont Auvergne 16-15 in an all-French final at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. After a tentative start – little surprise given just three points separated the teams in two domestic clashes this year – the sides were level 3-3 at half-time but Clermont cut loose after the break by scoring two tries in five minutes.

Athletics: Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford received an indication of just how tough a challenge he faces in trying to add the world title to his London 2012 gold medal as he finished third at the Diamond League meeting in Shanghai yesterday. Chinese youngster Li Jinzhe was the unexpected winner as he leapt out to a world-leading 8.34 metres to claim victory. Li, 23, who was only 20th in qualifying last summer, edged out Russia’s European indoor champion Aleksandr Menkov (8.31m), with Rutherford managing a best of 8.08m.

Olympics: International Boxing Federation (AIBA) president C.K. Wu has decided to run for the post of the president of the International Olympic Committee, a source said. The Taiwanese is the third IOC member, behind Germany’s Thomas Bach and Singaporean Ng Ser Miang, both IOC vice presidents, to decide to run for the post with the election set for Sept. 10 at the IOC session in Buenos Aires. Rogge, who succeeded Juan Antonio Samaranch in 2001, sees his two-term presidency come to a mandatory end in September.

Boxing: Former champion Guillermo Jones, of Panama, stopped title holder Denis Lebedev with seconds remaining in the 11th round to reclaim his WBA cruiserweight crown from the Russian in Moscow late Friday. Jones improved his record to 39 wins, including 31 by knockout, with three defeats and two draws, while Lebedev’s record dropped to 25 wins and two loses.

Giro d’Italia: Italy’s Mauro Santambrogio won the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia, a mountain top finish after a 163-kms ride yesterday. Santambrogio beat compatriot Vincenzo Nibali, who came second in the same time and extended his overall lead after his rivals lost ground. Colombian Carlos Betancur was third, nine seconds off the pace.
