Rugby Union: The Scottish Rugby Union has confirmed its national team’s autumn programme will consist of three Tests against Japan, South Africa and Australia. The meeting with Japan has been penned in for November 9 at a venue to be decided. The other two Tests, against the Springboks on November 17 and the Walla-bies on November 23 will be played at Murrayfield.

Cricket: The shallow depth of Australia’s cricketing stocks were exposed yesterday with selectors being forced to recall two 35-year-olds in an attempt to wrest back the Ashes from England in July. Veteran wicket-keeper Brad Haddin, who had been dumped last year, and top-order batsman Chris Rogers, who had played just one test in 2008, were named in a 16-man squad for the first of back-to-back Ashes series against England.

Basket, NBA: New York Knicks turned up the pressure in the second half once again to shut down Boston Celtics and take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven first-round series. Trailing the visitors 48-42, the Knicks outscored Boston 32-11 in the third quarter and limited them to 12 points in the fourth for an 87-71 victory. “It’s about making adjustments at half-time,” said New York’s Kenyon Martin, who hauled down 11 rebounds.

Horse Racing: The owners of Cheltenham Racecourse plan to raise £15 million towards the cost of a new grandstand by selling horse racing fans a bond offering rewards including discounts on tickets. The Jockey Club, which owns the track in western England, is planning to spend £45 million on improvements for Cheltenham, adding a new grandstand and more luxurious royal box by 2016.
