Bodybuilding: Joe Weider (picture), the self-made fitness and bodybuilding guru who built a magazine empire, died on Saturday at the age of 93. Weider, also known for starting the Mr Olympia bodybuilding contest in the 1960s and mentoring a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, passed away from heart failure at a Los Angeles area hospital, his long-time publicist Charlotte Parker said. Born in a tough neighbourhood of Montreal in 1920, Weider began lifting weights as a teenager to stand up to bullies before competing in his first contest at the age of 17, according to a biography provided by Parker.

Cricket: England’s bowlers dragged their side back into the third and deciding test against New Zealand as they reduced the hosts to 35 for three in their second innings at the close of play on the third day at Eden Park yesterday. New Zealand had dismissed England for 204 after tea on the back of Trent Boult’s first five-wicket haul but chose not to enforce the follow on after they held a lead of 239 runs after making 443 in their first innings.

Golf: Looking like his old imposing self, Tiger Woods surged into the third round lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, on Saturday, setting his sights on winning an eighth Bay Hill title and retaking the number one ranking. Four back of overnight leaders Justin Rose and Bill Haas when the day began, Woods walked off the course to thundering cheers and in full command after returning a brilliant six-under 66 for a two-shot lead over compatriots John Huh and Rickie Fowler. Woods has triumphed at “Arnie’s Place” seven times and one more victory would match Sam Snead’s PGA Tour record for most wins in a single event. It would also see him reclaim top spot in the world rankings from Rory McIlroy.

Basket, NBA: Sacramento officials announ-ced that they had reached a $450 million deal with private developers to build an entertainment and sports complex they hope will keep the Kings basketball team from leaving town for Seattle. A private investor group led by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen is seeking to buy the Sacramento Kings and move them to Seattle.

Cycling: Ireland’s Daniel Martin won the final overall classification of the Tour of Catalunya yesterday. Second behind the Garmin-Sharp rider was Spain’s Joaquim Rodriguez, with Michele Scarponi of Italy in third. The final day’s racing, from El Vendrell to the Montjuic park circuit in Barcelona, was won by Belgium’s Thomas De Gendt.
