Golf: Golfer Tiger Woods and Olympic skiing champion Lin-dsey Vonn confirmed yesterday they are dating. Woods released a statement and photographs of the pair on his website and Facebook page before Vonn posted similar messages on her social media accounts. “Lindsey and I have been friends for some time, but over the last few months we have become very close and are now dating,” said Woods. “We thank you for your support and for respecting our privacy.”

Cricket: Persistent rain and a pitch that offered the seam bowlers little assistance ensured the second test between New Zealand and England at the Basin Reserve ended in a damp draw when the final day’s play was abandoned without a ball being bowled yesterday. Much of Sunday’s fourth day was also washed out after lunch as intermittent rain showers swept across the Wellington region resulting in a near farcical situation as the umpires cleared the ground for play three times, only for the rain to return and force further delays.

Basket, NBA: Miami Heat were given a bit of a scare in the fourth quarter by Toronto Raptors but were virtually unstoppable late on and won their 22nd-consecutive game with a 108-91 win. The Heat built up a 16-point lead in the first half, but the Raptors chipped away and tied the game early in the fourth quarter before Miami pulled away down the stretch. Miami are now tied with the 2007-08 Houston Rockets in second place with 22 straight wins in the NBA. Only the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, who won 33 in a row, remain ahead of them.

Baseball: Giant-killers Puerto Rico ended Japan’s World Baseball Classic reign on Sunday, combining a strong pitching effort with the power of Alex Rios to win their semi-final showdown 3-1 at AT&T Park, San Francisco. Rios crushed a towering two-run homer in the seventh inning off reliever Atsushi Nohmi to break open a taut pitchers’ duel and give Puerto Rico a 3-0 lead. Puerto Rico will play the winner of the other semi-final between unbeaten Dominican Republic and the Netherlands.
