Olympics: A Taiwanese Olympic gold medallist has lost his appeal against a ruling which barred him from taking part in an election for the IOC athletes’ commission last year. Chu Mu-yen, gold medallist in taekwondo at the 2004 Athens Games, was ruled by the IOC to have campaigned inappropriately and used methods which were against the rules. The Court of Arbitration for Sport said in a statement that it found Chu was guilty of “several violations” in the run-up to the August election last year.

Motor Racing: Former grand prix driver Ralf Schumacher hung up his helmet and moved into team management yesterday, only months after older brother and seven times world champion Michael retired from Formula One. Mercedes said the 37-year-old German had relinquished his seat in the DTM (German touring car) series for a new role as managing shareholder at RSC Mucke Motorsport where he will support young drivers. Ralf is Germany’s third most successful Formula One driver, with six race wins, behind brother Michael and triple world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Tennis: Victoria Azarenka’s boyfriend, American musician and rapper Redfoo, has entered the US Open national play-offs in a bid to earn a spot in the final grand slam of the year. Redfoo, who will play under his given name of Stefan Gordy, has entered the Northern California sectional qualifying tournament in Salinas from June 18-23, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said.

Figure Skating: Patrick Chan put a season of frustration behind him by completing a hat-trick of world titles with a victory in Ontario that establishes the Canadian as the man to beat next year in Sochi. Chan became the first skater since Russia’s Alexei Yagudin (1998-2000) to claim three consecutive world titles.

Baseball: Puerto Rico jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on to upset the US 4-3 to reach the semi-finals of the World Baseball Classic and eliminate the favourites in Miami. The win improved Puerto Rico’s mark to 4-2 in the 16-team competition and gave them the last spot for the final round in San Francisco, joining defending champions Japan, the Netherlands and Dominican Republic.
