Horse Racing: Bobs Worth provided Nicky Henderson with a second Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup in three years under Barry Geraghty, yesterday. In maintaining his unbeaten record at the track, Bobs Worth, the 11-4 favourite, outstayed Tony McCoy and Sir Des Champs up the Cheltenham hill. Long Run, Henderson’s winner from 2011, attempted to make all for his amateur jockey Sam Waley-Cohen but faded into third.

Baseball: Dominican Republic scored a pair of ninth-inning runs off one of Major League Baseball’s most dominant relievers to beat the United States 3-1 and clinch a semi-finals berth in the World Baseball Classic in Miami. Craig Kimbrel had been nearly untouchable for Atlanta Braves in 2012 but with the game on the line, the hard-throwing closer yielded a pinch-hit, run-scoring single by Erick Aybar and another RBI-single to Jose Reyes. The victory sent the undefeated Dominicans into delirium and the US team into an elimination game against Puerto Rico. Japan, winners of the first two WBC titles, and the Netherlands have already qualified for the semi-finals, which will start tomorrow, with the title game on Tuesday.

Cricket: Matt Prior produced an exceptional counter-attacking innings then Stuart Broad captured two wickets in successive balls as England took control of the second test against New Zealand by the close of play of the second day yesterday. England, bowled out for 465 just minutes before the tea interval, reduced New Zealand to 66 for three at stumps and put themselves firmly in charge of the match with three days still to play. Kane Williamson was 32 not out, while Dean Brownlie was on eight after England’s pace bowlers had given the New Zealand line-up a torrid working over in the final session.
