Davis Cup: India’s tennis chiefs yesterday attempted to end a simmering Davis Cup row with the country’s players by agreeing to most of their demands ahead of next month’s tie against South Korea. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) accepted the demand for higher prize money, a change in the squad’s support staff, appointment of a full-time physiotherapist and the players’ involvement in the choice of venues for ties.

Cricket: Mike Hussey bowed out of Test cricket with a win when he guided Australia to a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka yesterday, giving the home side a clean sweep of the three-match series. Left-hander Hussey, playing in his 79th and final Test after announcing his international retirement, got his team over the line after the loss of five wickets on a tense fourth day at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Dakar Rally: Former champion Carlos Sainz opened his campaign for a second Dakar Rally title by taking the opening 13km special stage between Lima and Pisco in Peru, on Saturday. The Spaniard, who won the gruelling race in 2010 in a Volkswagen, drove his Buggy to victory in a time of 7 min 40 sec, beating Argentina’s Lucio Alvarez, in a Toyota, into second, with French driver Guerlain Chicherit, in an SMG, claiming third.

Baseball: A former pitcher for Japanese baseball team 1Yomiuri Giants, Cho Sung-Min, was found dead at his home in Seoul yesterday in an apparent suicide, police said. Cho’s body was found by his girlfriend in the bathroom of his apartment. Cho, 39, was the former husband of top Korean actress Choi Jin-Sil, who took her own life in 2008, four years after their marriage ended in a violent divorce.
