Motor Racing: A total of 16 people were injured, one with severe burns, when a fire erupted in the Williams team garage yesterday in the aftermath of Pastor Maldonado’s victory in the Spanish Grand Prix. In a statement, the Catalan regional government said that one person was airlifted to hospital with serious burns while five others were taken to a local hospital for the effects of smoke inhalation. Ten more were treated at the circuit’s medical centre after the incident caused by a fuel fire at the back of the team garage as they were packing up to leave.
Horse Racing: Eight-year-old bay gelding Arcadius died of a heart attack and aneurysm only moments after winning the $150,000 Iroquois Steeplechase horse race in Washington, on Saturday. Winning jockey Brian Crowley was posing for pictures with Arcadius owner Ed Sawyer when the horse collapsed.
Basket, NBA: Los Angeles Lakers beat Denver 96-87 to edge the Nuggets 4-3 in their first-round series and reach the Western Conference semi-finals where they will face Oklahoma. Pau Gasol finished with 23 points and 17 rebounds while Andrew Bynum had 16 points and 18 rebounds.
Boxing: WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria gained revenge over Mexico’s Omar Nino Romero yester-day, winning by a technical KO to retain his title. The victory earned him presidential congratulations from the Filipino head of state.
Golf: Talented young South Korean Kim Bi-O cruised to a five-stroke victory in the GS Caltex Maek-yung Open Championship, in Seoul, yesterday. Kim, 21, shot a four-under-par 68 for a final score of 15-under 273. The victory, the second of his pro career, earned him $171,000.
