Rugby Union: Former Australian captain Michael Lynagh has been admitted to a Brisbane hospital after suffering a stroke. Reports yesterday said that Lynagh, 48, was taken to hospital with blood clots on the brain. Lynagh is regarded as one of the all-time Australian rugby greats, winning 72 caps for Australia in the 1980s and 1990s.

Figure Skating: World champions Patrick Chan and Carolina Kostner will be looking to put the icing on the cake when they compete at the figure skating World Team Trophy in Tokyo this week. Canada’s Chan retained his men’s world title and Kostner gave Italy their first ever women’s crown in Nice less than three weeks before this season-closing team competition, which opens today with $1 million in prize money.

Tennis: Kim Clijsters (picture) announced that she will bypass the clay season in the hope of recovering from a hip injury in time for the grass season and the Olympic Games. Clijsters intends to make her return to action at the Rosmalen tournament in the Netherlands, which begins on June 17.

Cricket: West Indies batsman Chris Gayle yesterday visited a female spectator who suffered a broken nose after being hit by one of his sixes as she watched from the stands at an Indian Premier League match. The Royal ­Challengers Bangalore opener smashed eight sixes, including five in a row off leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, during an ­explosive innings that helped his team beat the Pune Warriors.

Equestrian: Saudi Arabia’s hopes of Olympic showjumping glory this summer could be hit hard amid a doping probe into two of the country’s top jumpers. Khaled Al Eid, a bronze medallist at the 2000 Games, and Abdullah Sharbatly face Inter-national Equestrian Federation tribunals and may miss the Games after winter tests of their mounts produced positive results for use of banned products.
