Field Hockey: Argentina won the women’s Champions Trophy for the fifth time in Rosario on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Great Britain in the final. The Netherlands claimed the bronze medal by defeating Germany 5-4. Argen-tina were on top for most of the first half against the British and finally took the lead on their fifth penalty corner with Silvina D’Elia scoring what proved to be the match winner.

Rugby Union: Stuart Lancaster confirmed he has applied to become England’s next full-time coach after demonstrating his passion for the post by shedding blood during the side’s Calcutta Cup win away to Scotland. So taken was Lancaster with fly-half Charlie Hodgson’s try early in the second half, he accidentally punched a light-fitting in the coaches’ box and had to have stitches inserted in a finger wound. “My application has gone in,” said Lancaster.

Golf: Kyle Stanley (picture) bounced back from a bitter defeat to win the Phoenix Open last weekend, erasing an eight-shot deficit to triumph a week after his last-round collapse at Torrey Pines. Stanley was brought to tears at Torrey after a triple-bogey at the final hole dropped him into a play-off that he lost. On Sunday, however, he was in position to strike as Spencer Levin suffered a similar collapse – surrendering a six-shot overnight lead.

Cricket: Pakistan’s bowlers sealed an emphatic 71-run win in the third and final Test against England in Dubai yesterday, inflicting a 3-0 series whitewash humiliation in the process. Set a daunting 324-run target, England were bowled out for 252 with paceman Umar Gul taking 4-61 to help Pakistan achieve a first-ever Test clean sweep against their opponents. Pakistan won the first Test by ten wickets and the second by 72 runs.

Tennis: The United States beat Belarus 5-0 in their Fed Cup World Group-II tie at Worcester, Massachusetts, yesterday. Serena Williams rallied from a set down to beat Anastasia Yakimova 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the day’s first singles match to give the Americans an unassailable 3-0 lead. The United States advanced to a World Group play-off and will now play for a chance to return to the elite group in 2013.
