Cycling: Two-time Tour Down Under champion Andre Greipel, of Germany, signalled his intentions for a third overall win by triumphing at the warm-up Down Under Classic criterium yesterday. Held over 30 laps of an inner city Adelaide circuit, the Down Under Classic criterium does not count towards the standings of the Tour Down Under, the first event of cycling’s World Tour held over six stages between tomorrow and Sunday.

Boxing: More than 300 people serenaded boxing icon Muhammad Ali with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” Saturday at a lavish $1,000-a-plate fundraiser and party in his Kentucky hometown. Ali turns 70 tomorrow. The former three-time world heavyweight champ now suffers from Parkinson’s Disease which doctors have said could be a result of his boxing career.

Tennis: Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen beat Julien Benneteau 6-2, 7-5 in the rain-delayed Sydney International final yesterday, sealing a remarkable win after he came through qualifying. Nieminen came into the pre-Australian Open contest with a 4-0 record against Benneteau. He is the first qualifier to win an ATP title since Sergiy Stakhovsky in St Petersburg in 2009.

Cricket: Australia routed India by an innings and 37 runs inside three days on Sunday to seal a crushing 3-0 series victory against the hapless tourists. Rahul Dravid and M.S. Dhoni were out before lunch in Perth and Australia cleaned up the tail for 171 soon after the break to complete their third emphatic win. India have now lost seven straight away Tests after their 4-0 loss to England last year and this latest heavy defeat is likely to lead to calls back home for a shake-up, especially of the top order.
