Gymnastics: French gymnast Thomas Bouhail, who won a silver medal in the vault at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, could miss the 2012 London Games after breaking his left leg in training. The 2010 world champion suffered the injury when he fell from the parallel bars apparatus before undergoing surgery. “He slipped from the bar in what was a very simple move. It’s almost inexplicable and even he doesn’t know why it happened,” Laurent Guelzec, the coach of the French men’s team, said.

Cricket: Sachin Tendulkar was bowled with three balls left on the second day of the first Test against Australia yesterday to be denied a crack at his 100th international century. Tendulkar looked poised to go to stumps and make yet another attempt to reach the landmark before he was bowled by Peter Siddle for 73 in the day’s final over. India reached the close in a commanding position at 214 for three, trailing Australia’s first innings by 119 runs.

Formula One: Karun Chandhok (picture) plans to have two careers in 2012 by combining his role as a reserve driver with a sportscar campaign which could give him a shot at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race. Chandok, who raced for Team Lotus in Germany last season, as well as running nine times in Friday practice, recognises a full-time drive in F1 is unlikely next year. “My target is still F1, but the World Endurance Championship is very interesting. There’s only one clash with F1 , so I can keep my hand in there doing a bunch of Fridays,” he said.

Tennis: Alex Corretja, former coach of British star Andy Murray, is taking over as captain of Spain’s Davis Cup team, the Spanish federation said yesterday. Corretja replaces Albert Costa, who quit on December 15 to head the country’s selection committee. The 37-year-old will be captain for the next two seasons after reaching an agreement on terms with Spanish tennis federation head Jose Luis Escanuela, the body said in a statement.

Judo: Japan’s retired double Olympic judo gold medallist Masato Uchishiba was indicted yesterday on charges of raping a teenage girl. Uchishiba, 33, who won the 66kg title at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and retired from competition last year, was arrested three weeks ago. He has acknowledged that he had sex with the unnamed girl, but has insisted it was consensual, police have said. The Tokyo public prosecutors office said Uchishiba had sexual intercourse with the girl in a hotel room on September 20 when she was “unable to resist as she was in a profound sleep due to intoxication”.
