Rooney: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could miss Sunday’s Premier League trip to basement side Sunderland due to an ankle problem, manager Jose Mourinho has said. Injuries have restricted Rooney, who missed Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with his former club Everton at Old Trafford due to ankle pain, to just three appearances in the last two months. “I don’t know but two ankles, I don’t think it’s easy to recover in a couple of days,” Mourinho told British media.

Aspas: Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas has agreed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2022. The 29-year-old has scored 21 goals in all competitions for Celta this season and is the highest-scoring Spaniard in LaLiga with 15, leaving him behind only Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo. That form saw him win his first Spain cap in November, when he scored a brilliant late goal in a 2-2 draw with England.

Gladbach: Laszlo Benes’ first Bundesliga goal gave Borussia Monchengladbach a 1-0 home victory against Hertha Berlin. The 19-year-old, on only his second league appearance, inflicted a seventh successive away league loss on the capital club with a low, 25-yard strike beyond Rune Jarstein after 16 minutes.

Messi double: Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona produced a scintillating first-half display in their 3-0 win against Sevilla. Messi bagged a brace after Luis Suarez’s overhead kick had given the hosts a 25th-minute lead. Luis Enrique’s side coasted through the second period to record a ninth win in 10 LaLiga matches while the visitors had Vitolo sent off in stoppage time.
