Silva: Gilberto Silva has left his role as Panathinaikos sporting director by mutual consent. The former Brazil midfielder, a key member of the 2002 World Cup-winning side, was in the role for only seven months following his appointment in mid-May. The 40-year-old spent the last three seasons of his playing career at Panathinaikos following six campaigns with Arsenal that ended in July 2008.

Bennell: Former football coach Barry Bennell has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with child sex offences. The 62-year-old appeared at South Cheshire Magistrates’ Court in Crewe via video-link charged with five counts of indecent assault on a boy, two counts of inciting a boy to commit an act of gross indecency and one count of assault with intent to commit buggery.

Ranger: Former Premier League striker Nile Ranger has been charged with fraud and money laundering offences, police said. The 25-year-old footballer is accused of conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering in February last year. The Metropolitan Police said the offences relate to the obtaining of a vulnerable person’s bank account details by phone with a view to getting hold of their money. The player has previously played for Newcastle and England U-19s, moving to join Southend this year.

Bazoer: Holland international Riechedly Bazoer will join Bundesliga strugglers Wolfsburg from Ajax in January. The 20-year-old defensive midfielder has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Wolves after they agreed a fee of €12 million with the Dutch side. Bazoer made his Ajax debut in October 2014.

Newcastle: Newcastle moved back to the top of the Champion-ship table with a 2-0 victory over struggling Wigan, yesterday. Former Latics midfielder Mohamed Diame scored the opening goal in the 26th minute and Christian Atsu made sure of the points 12 minutes from time. The victory restored Newcastle’s one-point lead over Brighton, who beat Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday.
