Rested: Cristiano Ronaldo will play no part in Real Madrid’s game against Deportivo La Coruna today after the prolific Portuguese forward was left out of the squad. Midfielder Luka Modric and striker Karim Benzema were also omitted from the squad for Real’s final league game of 2016, with coach Zinedine Zidane opting to rest the trio before the team fly to Japan for the Club World Cup.

Zorya charged: Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk have been charged by UEFA over the crowd incidents that occurred during their Europa League defeat to Man. United. UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Zorya over the setting off of fireworks, pitch invasion and the blocking of stairways following Thursday night’s game in Odessa. A firecracker had landed worryingly close to Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero during the opening 45 minutes.

Union action: Bangladesh labour activists said yesterday they had joined a lawsuit in Switzerland against FIFA for allegedly failing to use its influence to ensure people working on 2022 World Cup facilities in Qatar are treated fairly. The suit, filed in FIFA’s home city of Zurich with the backing of the largest labour union in the Netherlands, calls on FIFA to force Qatar to adopt “minimum labour standards” for migrant workers preparing for the tournament, including at least the right to quit a job or leave the country.

Pisa: The Corrado family have reached an agreement to save Pisa from bankruptcy as the Serie B club finally concluded a prolonged take-over deal. A statement yesterday said the Carrara Holding Group will be selling 100 per cent of the club’s shares to Magico SRL which is owned by the Corrado family.
