Samuel: Former Inter defender Walter Samuel has rejoined the Italian club as part of the backroom team. The 38-year-old centre-back, who won 56 caps for Argentina, spent nine years at the San Siro before leaving for Basle in summer 2014. He hung up his boots in May this year and has now been confirmed as part of new head coach Stefano Pioli’s staff.

Inspection: A global trade union for construction workers that has criticised labour conditions in Qatar will inspect stadiums being built for the 2022 World Cup in the Gulf Arab state. The Geneva-based Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), whose general secretary in 2015 said Qatar’s migrant workers faced conditions akin to “modern-day slavery”, will inspect safety on World Cup sites and labour accommodations starting next year, according to a statement by Qatar’s 2022 World Cup organising body.

Howard: United States goalkeeper Tim Howard has sustained a groin injury and is expected to be sidelined for four months, his  club Colorado Rapids said. Howard suffered the injury, a fracture of the right adductor longus, during Friday’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying loss against Mexico.

Slade: Charlton have parted company with manager Russell Slade after just 16 matches in charge. Slade was appointed on June 6, signing a three-year-deal, but with the Addicks 15th in the table and six points off the play-off places, the 56-year-old has been relieved of his duties. Northern Irishman Chris O’Loughlin has been linked with the job.

FA Cup: Stourbridge will play League One side Northampton for a place in the FA Cup third round after they beat Whitehawk 3-0 in a replay. Whitehawk play in National League South, one division above Northern Premier League side Stourbridge, but failed to make their superior status count. Joining Stourbridge will be Curzon Ashton after they beat Westfields, the lowest ranked side in the competition, 3-1.

Williams: Swansea City are set to appoint former Nottingham Forest boss Paul Williams as the club’s assistant manager. Bob Bradley has been looking to fill the post since becoming Swansea manager last month and after speaking to several candidates, has decided on Williams. The 45-year-old’s contract at Forest was not renewed as Philippe Montanier was appointed the club’s permanent manager in the summer.
